China has said countries should be prudent when dealing with Taiwan-related issues, as a senior Taiwan official plans to visit the Vatican next month.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang made the comment when asked if China will protest to the Vatican or Italy over the visit of Taiwan's deputy leader Chen Chien-jen.

"The one-China policy has a general consensus in the international community, and it is also a principle that we adhere to when it comes to Taiwan's external relations," Lu said at a press conference.

The Vatican has no formal relations with Beijing but has maintained diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

China has repeatedly urged the Vatican to recognize the People's Republic of China as the sole government representing China and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.
