China sees fewer drunk driving accidents in May

From April 30 to May 31, 121,000 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol were reported nationwide, the Ministry of Public Security said on Friday.

The number of accidents was down by 34.6 percent and deaths caused by drunk driving down by 45.5 percent from the same period last year, according the ministry.

This sharp fall is attributed to a police campaign in May, when around 750,000 vehicles were stopped each day. Cases involving government employees were reported to Party disciplinary authorities, a procedure which the ministry said it will continue.

China criminalized drunk driving in 2011. The law states that all drunk driving constitutes a criminal offence, even if no accidents or other serious consequences occur.
