The tsunami warning center of the State Oceanic Administration will closely monitor the situation and issue timely updates.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck off the southwest of Sumatra island at 8:49 p.m. Wednesday (Beijing Time), according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The epicenter was monitored at 4.9 degrees south latitude and 94.21 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 20 kilometers.
