China confirmed on Wednesday that a Swedish citizen has been placed under "criminal compulsory measures," according to Chinese law.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei made the remarks at a regular press briefing.
Peter Dahlin, who worked for a legal aid institution, was being held in Beijing on suspicion of endangering state security, said Hong.
He said the case is still under investigation, adding that China will protect the lawful rights of aliens in China and will facilitate the Swedish Embassy in Beijing in conducting its consular functions.
Compulsory measures, according to China's Criminal Procedure Law, can include arrest, detention, summons, bail pending trial, or residential surveillance.
