The BASIC group of countries — Brazil, South Africa, India and China — showed solidarity for reaching an agreement at the Paris climate-change talks as the conference entered the second day of the ministerial level meeting. [Special Coverage]
Xie Zhenhua, China's special representative for climate, South Brazil's Environment Minister IzabellaTeixeira, South Africa's Minister of Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa, and Indian Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar issued a joint statement on Tuesday at a press conference in Paris.
They called for resolving remaining areas of divergence in order to adopt a clear, concise and coherent legal text acceptable to all parties in a timely manner.
The BASIC countries are committed to reach a comprehensive, balanced, ambitious and legally binding agreement on climate change as reflected in their leaders' statements at the opening of the Paris Conference, the statement said.
Having shown flexibility, the BASIC countries encourage all parties to show the flexibility required to reach a strong Paris outcome, according to the statement.
The BASIC group was formed in November 2009.
