Twenty-two miners were confirmed dead following a coal mine fire in northeastern China. The body of the last missing miner was retrieved on Tuesday afternoon.
The fire broke out at around 9:50 p.m. on Friday at a coal mine in Jixi, Heilongjiang Province. It is operated by state-owned Heilongjiang Longmay Mining Holding Group, according to the city government of Jixi.
Sixteen out of 38 miners who were working down in the shaft when the fire broke out managed to escape. The other 22 workers were trapped.
According to the emergency rescue headquarters, families of 20 victims have signed compensation agreements with the coal mine as of Tuesday.
The coal mine, with a production capacity of 2 million tonnes every year, is fully licensed. An investigation is under way.
