China's booming e-commerce has transformed the country's retail scene, but one of its youngest city in the South China Sea has been missing the party.

Chinese online retailer JD.com announced on Monday that it is up and running in the country's southernmost city Sansha, established as a city on a island in South China Sea in 2012.

Three years after its formal inception, Sansha is still building essential infrastructure such as roads and sewers. Only small packages can be delivered to island residents.

JD's base on the island allows it to deliver bigger home appliances such as TVs, refrigerators and washing machines. It will also help the sale and delivery of Sansha's local specialties, such as seafood and fruit to other parts of the country.
