Two Chinese companies have jointly donated over 14,000 U.S. dollars to construct five wells in the northern Sri Lanka to provide clean water for the war-torn residents.

Following a request by the Scar Vita humanitarian aid and relief project in Sri Lanka, the China Communications Construction Company Colombo Port City Project Company and China Harbor Sri Lanka Area Company donated 14,400 U.S. dollars towards constructing the wells.

Vice General Manager of China Harbor Sri Lanka Area Company, Deng Bo told Xinhua Wednesday that while Sri Lanka has made obvious development and progress in the recent years, the dilemma of having clean water in the northern region still existed.

As an organization which is actively involved in the state and social construction in Sri Lanka, China Communication Construction Company and China Harbor Company have positively fulfilled its social responsibility and committed itself to contributing more to Sri Lanka, to benefit Sri Lankan citizens.

General Manager of SHARP, Sumith Balasuriya said that the construction of the wells was one of the active demands of the northern residents and the construction of these wells would greatly improve the living conditions of the locals.

"Most of the residents in Puthukkudiyiruppu earn a little salary by part-time work and fishing. Some of the villagers still live under the poverty line, and their living standard is low. The construction work of these wells is one of the active demands of local residents, and this work will greatly improve their living conditions. However, the lack of capital had made this work become a very tough task," Balasuriya said adding that the donation from the Chinese companies will drastically help solve the issue.

He further said that the kindness of these Chinese enterprises was an inspiration and set an example to other transnational enterprises to stimulate more people to participate in the process of supporting the poor.

Since China Harbor entered the Sri Lankan market in 1998, it has fulfilled social responsibility and provided high quality returns.

It has carried out various public benefit activities such as providing disaster relief and donating to health, sports and social assistance. It has also funded students in Sri Lanka so that many children get education and has also contributed greatly towards local schools.
