Hong Kong's Chief Secretary for Administration Carrie Lam on Monday made an appeal to opposition legislators in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) to support the government's constitutional development plan which will be put to a vote later this week.
If the plan is vetoed, Hong Kong will be afflicted by continuing division, antagonism and meaningless squabbling, and Hong Kong citizens will eventually become victims, Lam wrote in an article published Monday on the Ming Pao daily.
Lam looked back at her 35-year work experience at the government, especially those consultations and activities she took part in since October 2013, and said her only goal was to send votes to 5 million eligible Hong Kong people.
In 2017, up to 5 million Hong Kongers are expected to have the chance to vote for their chief executive for the first time in history, thanks to a proposed universal suffrage package unveiled by the local government in April.
Lam has said the administration will not make any last-minute concessions to win over the opposition legislators. She stressed that having "one person, one vote" in 2017 is definitely better than maintaining the status quo, and urged legislators to act in the best interests of Hong Kong.
