According to the Beijing News, with the implementation of the second child policy last year, over 30,000 families applied for a second child in Beijing in 2014, leading to a strain on medical resources for pregnant women and infants.

According to the Beijing Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, 17,215 women gave birth at the hospital in 2014, an increase of 25 percent year on year. Of these, 2.5 percent were over the age of 41.

Fang Laiying, director of the Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning, told the Beijing News that the city plans on dedicating more funding to obstetrics in Beijing and that over the next three years they expect to increase the number of beds in the city by 1,000.
