The central authorities have warned officials to rein in spending and luxury gifts during a season known for over consumption.

The circular, which was recently issued by the general offices of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and the State Council, underscored that officials must remain frugal and not be tempted by corruption.

Officials were also reminded that unwarranted bonuses, banquets or galas, trips to private clubs, entertainment or travel financed with public money were strictly banned.

The officials were also told to not gamble or use public vehicles for personal purposes.

For the past two years, the central authorities have issued extravagance warnings to officials ahead of various holidays, such as the Mid-Autumn Festival, the National Day holiday, New Year's Day and Spring Festival.

The CPC leadership meted out an "eight-point" guideline in late 2012 to curb corruption and improve work practice within the party and bring the people and the Party together.

A total of 96,788 officials have been punished for breaching the "eight-point" rules as of late November.

People in China will soon celebrate two important holidays of the year, the New Year's Day and the Spring Festival, or the Chinese New Year's Day.
