The spectacular natural phenomenon took place in East China, that is the Qiantang River tidal bore.

More than 167 thousand tourists flocked to see the river's rolling waves during this year's three-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday.

Lao Yancang was one of the best spots to see the surging tides. But for safety reasons, local police have warned tourists to stay away from the levees built along he river's edge, especially during the night. The levees are designed to reduce the tide's impact on the riverbank.

The Qiantang River's tidal bore is one of the three strongest tidal events in the world, alongside the Amazon River in South America and the Ganges in India. The yearly phenomenon is caused by the gravitational pull of the moon.
