A majority of young respondents are willing to live with their parents, while 80 percent of senior residents prefer to live independently if they are in good health, an online survey showed.

The survey, jointly conducted by the Shanghai Women's Federation and Fudan University, had more than 300 respondents to a questionnaire, with their ages ranging from 20 to 60.

The majority (75.4 percent) of younger respondents said they want to live with their parents. The reasons given included that an only child has the responsibility to take care of his or her parents and return the love and care they received in childhood, and that the elderly parents can take care of their grandchildren, Wen Hui Pao reported on Tuesday.

In contrast, about 80 percent of elderly respondents said they want to live independently while they are in good health, mainly with their spouse.

The young respondents said, on average, they would like to spend 1,500 yuan ($244) each month to hire caregivers or pay for services for their parents.
