Beijing residents are eating unhealthier levels of meat, oil and salt than they did a decade ago, the Beijing Youth Daily reported. The findings were made by the Beijing Health and Family Planning Commission in a recent report on nutrition and diet habits. Although locals have greater diversity in their diet than 10 years ago, their average consumption of meat, oil and salt is above the recommended amount. This puts them at greater risk of obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes, the report found.

The average Beijing resident consumes six grams of oil and four grams of salt more than the recommended daily amount. Their average daily intake of fruits and vegetables is only half of the recommended amount, while their average intake of seafood is less than one-third of the recommended amount, the report found.
