Police in San Francisco have boosted security at the Chinese consulate general there after an arson attack on Wednesday caused severe damage to the facilities, the US State Department said on Friday.

"The San Francisco Police Department is providing 24/7 coverage at the Chinese consulate while the investigation continues," spokeswoman Marie Harf told reporters at a regular press briefing.

She refused to offer more details, but saying that "We're looking into whether more security is appropriate."

The Federal Bureau of Investigation, now leading the investigation into the arson, said Thursday the fire was set intentionally.

A person got out of a mini-van parked in front of the main entrance of the Chinese consulate, poured two buckets of gasoline onto the front door and set it on fire, severely damaging the door but causing no casualties.

China on Thursday urged the United States to take "effective measures" to protect its diplomatic institutions and staff and prevent similar incidents.
