Starting at the end of February, a rectification project on Nanluoguxiang was initiated, and unlicensed shops have been shut down. Most of the closed 61 shops were low-end snack shops, the Beijing Evening News reported.

The shuttered businesses included several shops selling stinky tofu, roast squid, and skewers. Compared to the previous number of around 80, there are now only 22 snack shops left, accounting for less than 10 percent of the total 260 shops. According to the development planning for Nanluoguxiang, the authorities will no longer approve new food and drinks businesses for the neighborhood. Instead, there will be more cultural shops, for example, those that specialize in creative decoration or original-design scarves.
