On March 30, as part of Bird-loving Week, Fangshan district was honored by the China Wildlife Conservation Association as the hometown of the endangered Chinese black stork, the Beijing Daily reported.

From 2012 to 2013, the Beijing Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center did a population count and habitat assessment of the black stork in Beijing, and found 396 of them.

There are only 2,000 black storks in the world, and only 500 of the East Asian subspecies. Fangshan district is considered to be a critical habitat for the Chinese black stork.

There will be 23 protection areas for black storks near the Juma River, where the water areas will be restricted for entrances.
