The Shanghai Municipal Education Commission denied a news report Monday that said Shanghai International Studies University will be the first venue on the Chinese mainland to host the SAT.

The commission did not know the source of the Wenhui Daily story, which said the university will allow around 5,000 students to take the SAT as early as June.

The SAT is one of the standardized tests that universities in the US require for admission.

However, the test isn't offered on the mainland.

Mainland students who want to apply to a university in the US have to travel abroad to take the SAT, usually in Hong Kong, Macao, Singapore, Japan or South Korea.

Shanghai International Studies University also denied the report.

"We have never made any announcement about holding the SAT at our university," said Yi Yonggang, the university's press officer.

Yi said the university cannot announce that it will host the test without authorization from the city's education commission.
