China starts competition with skating, skiing at 2014 Winter Olympics

While the opening ceremony may not be until tomorrow, qualifying for several events has started at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games.

Games officials have been rushing to complete preparations in time. Qualifying events that have got underway include the slopestyle snowboarding, and the ladies moguls - which is basically freestyle skiing involving tricks and jumps.

Meanwhile, China's Yan Han was competing in the men's figure skating, while Zhang Hao and Peng Cheng were in the team pair short program. Ning Qin has become the first Chinese person to compete in the women's freestyle skiing on the Olympic stage.
