Express delivery companies will be fined up to 30,000 yuan ($4,956) for leaking customers' contact information, the Beijing Times reported.

According to guidelines issued by the Beijing municipal government, the policy is intended to prevent courier companies from profiting by the disclosure of senders' and receivers' addresses and phone numbers. Moreover, delivery companies should also refuse service to senders who do not allow parcels to be opened and the contents checked.

The move to tighten controls comes after parcels tainted with toxic chemicals killed a man in Shandong Province and poisoned seven others in December 2013.
