A recent spate of fraudulent text messages sent to passengers has prompted several major Chinese airlines, including China Southern and China Eastern, to join the police in investigating personal information leakage, the Beijing Daily reported.

Told that their tickets have been rescheduled or canceled, passengers are asked to pay again, often by providing bank card numbers and verification codes. Civil aviation authorities are warning passengers to be alert for such messages, to call the airline service hotlines for confirmation, and to remember that neither bank card numbers nor verification codes are needed for ticket rescheduling or cancellation.
