More than 75 percent of the nation's institutions of higher education have failed to implement the smoking ban, according to the Chinese Association on Tobacco Control, the Beijing Morning Post reports.

The investigation, which included undercover interviews and videotaping, tracked 800 institutions across 31 provinces. Only 194 of the schools scored more than 60 out of 100 points for creating a smoke-free environment. On average, universities in Beijing ranked second-best in the nation.

Undercover interviews revealed that the heaviest smoking was concentrated in the student cafeterias and male dormitories. Over a million people in China die of smoking-related illnesses every year.
