China Buddhist Association celebrates 60th anniversary

The Buddhist Association of China (BAC) on Monday celebrated its 60th anniversary, with China's top political advisor calling for further contributions to the country and the people.

Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said at the ceremony in the Great Hall of People that Buddhism had developed along with the country's prosperity after opening up and reform policy.

The BAC helped the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the government implement freedom of religious belief, making positive contributions to economic development and social stability, added Yu.

He hoped Buddhists would carry on their fine traditions and make new contributions to prosperity and the people's well-being.

Liu Yandong, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and vice premier, said at the ceremony that she hoped the BAC could link the authorities and the people, promote virtue in society and strengthen institutional improvement.

Some other senior officials and representatives from other religious institutions also attended the ceremony.
