According to the draft of the Beijing air pollution prevention and management regulation discussed at the end of July, open-air barbecues can be fined as much as 20,000 yuan ($3,266) for pollution, but this fine has yet to be enforced in some of the areas, the Beijing Evening News reports.

While Beijing residents complain about the smoke caused by sidewalk barbecues, environmental protection and city management departments both think it is not their responsibility to resolve the issue.

One expert says that outdoor barbecues produce 15 percent of the local PM2.5 levels.
