Mafia-style gang accomplice sent back to China

A suspect who was allegedly a member of a mafia-style gang was escorted back to China on Wednesday from the Republic of Korea (ROK), according to a Ministry of Public Security statement.

The suspect, surnamed Ding, was taken back to Qingdao city in east China's Shandong province more than three years after he fled China, according to the statement.

Ding was arrested on Aug. 4 at ROK's Incheon Airport by police from the two countries when he tried leaving the country, it said.

Ding was a member of a mafia-style gang led by Nie Lei, who was accused of racketeering and intentionally injuring others, according to the ministry.

The gang carried out criminal activities by operating underground casinos and nightclubs, leading to the death of two people and 22 others being injured in Qingdao, the statement said.

Ding fled to the ROK after the gang was busted and Nie was arrested in June 2010, the statement said.

The Qingdao Municipal Intermediate People's Court sentenced Nie to death in August 2012.
