A yellow wave warning for Typhoon Soulik was raised to orange Friday morning, according to the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center.

From midday Friday to midday Saturday, Soulik is expected to whip up sea waves as high as 8 to 11 meters in the southern part of the East China Sea and in waters near the Diaoyu Islands. It is also expected to create waves ranging in height from 4 to 7 meters in the Taiwan Strait, as well as waves of 3.5 to 5.5 meters near Zhejiang and Fujian provinces.

The forecasting center said the wave warning might be upgraded to red Friday afternoon.

Soulik is expected to make landfall in northern Taiwan during the night on Friday before moving toward Zhejiang and Fujian from midday to evening Saturday.

The center also forecast up to 180 cm of precipitation from Friday to Saturday morning in coastal areas in Zhejiang and Fujian.

China uses a four-tier color coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe weather, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
