Legislation urged to guarantee nuclear security

Experts on Monday called for creating new legislation regarding the use of nuclear energy in order to standardize its use and guarantee security.

"Radioactive waste disposal has become a prominent problem with the development of nuclear energy and technology," said Pan Ziqiang, an expert on nuclear security from the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Pan made the remarks while attending a symposium marking the 10th anniversary of the promulgation of the Law on the Prevention and Control of Radioactive Pollution, adding that it is necessary to enact similar laws as soon as possible.

"The Ministry of Environmental Protection has tightened supervision over the country's 46 nuclear power units and nearly 60,000 nuclear technology users," Li Ganjie, vice minister of environmental protection, said at the meeting.

As many as 747 sites for monitoring nuclear radiation had been established across the country by the end of 2012, according to official data.

Shen Yueyue, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, also called for more efforts to implement the Law on the Prevention and Control of Radioactive Pollution.
