Pakistani officials are claiming they have made "important headway" in the investigation into the killing of nine foreign mountain climbers, including two Chinese, in the northern areas of the country. Authorities have pledged to reveal the suspects' names in two days.

Syed Mehdi Shah, an official in Gilgit-Baltistan says nearly 40 suspected militants had been detained in connection with the incident. No one has as yet been formally charged. Attackers, wearing security forces' uniforms, stormed the base camp of Nanga Parbat, in Gilgit- Baltistan late Saturday.

Nine foreign tourists were killed, including two Chinese, one American with dual Chinese citizenship and three Ukrainians. One Sunni tour guide was killed, while the militants let another Shia tour guide go. Two outlawed groups, the Taliban in Pakistan and Jundullah, had claimed responsibility for the brutal attack.

A Taliban spokesman told the media that the attack was to take revenge for the killing of Taliban deputy chief in a US drone strike last month.
