China takes 1st Water Polo Super League title

China's national women's Water Polo team has broken through on the world stage. China, edging Russia in a thrilling finale of the Super League here at the Water Cube in Beijing. And as our David Garrett reports, the team hopes this will just be the first of many more good things to come.

Tears and rain. China women's water polo team proved themselves on an unusually rainy day in Beijing. The side turned their high spirits into success. In a hotly contested contest. The hosts taking a 2-0 lead within three minutes. In the third with the home team leading four-three the Russians levelled it at 4-4.

China continued to attack...and scored three goals this nice move making it 7-4. Russia were not going to disappear, though, and pulled within one to 8-7 with only two minutes left. But as the clock ran down, it seemed nothing could stop China from winning the title although they had just a little bit of luck.

"It's not easy for us to win the final, especially when we were in the lead. But after all we are very happy winning it." Sun Yujun, Team China Captain said.

China had looked unstoppable throughout the tournament, which featured the worlds 8 elite nations. They beat London Olympic champion s the USA twice, once in the group stage, and again in the semis. The Chinese girls celebrated victory in the Water Cube like they were winning an Olympic gold medal.

"It was the first big water polo tournament after the Olympics. We finished fifth at the London Games, so the title is important means a lot to the team." Alexander Kleymenov, Team China Coach said.

Chinese fans filled up the Water Cube just like they did during the 2008 Olympic Games, getting behind this young team.

"I think it's quite special to watch water polo in an Olympic level stadium. I can feel the descendence of Olympic culture." water polo fan said.

"I came to support China, and I love the sports on water. It looks beautiful." water polo fan said.

The enjoyment was clear. They'll head to the FINA World Championships in Barcelona starting on next month as the team in form.
