Police hold activist Ye Haiyan for 13 days, reject release request

Local police in Bobai county, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, have rejected an application from women's and sexual rights activist Ye Haiyan's lawyers to suspend her 13-day administrative detention for intentional injury, her lawyer told the Global Times Sunday.

"The local police called me around noon to say the application was rejected, saying Ye should apply for the suspension herself, and there should be a guarantor. However, Ye's daughter is only 13 years old, which means she can't be a guarantor," lawyer Wang Quanping said. He submitted the application at midday Saturday.

Wang also added that local police said the application should be made during the administrative reconsideration or administrative litigation process, in which people can appeal to higher bodies for a reconsideration of their case, or file suit against government bodies.

"We are preparing an application for administration litigation," he said.

Ye, 38, who is a prolific blogger on the subjects of women's and sexual rights, allegedly injured three elderly women with a kitchen knife at her rented apartment in Bobai around noon on Thursday, according to the local police statement.

It is alleged that the three, along with eight other people, went to Ye's apartment to accuse her of destroying the image of their hostel and demanded compensation after she said it was a brothel last year. Their quarrels led to a fight, and Ye slashed the three victims' arms and backs.

"We consider the case as an illegal intrusion into Ye's apartment, but local police did not investigate the issue, and only paid attention to the intentional injury," Wang said, "It is also improper that local police detained Ye before she found a relative to take care of her daughter."

Bobai county police said that local police are only dealing with the intentional injury case, which is not connected to her online activities. Ye was uninjured, and the visitors entered her apartment with her permission, China Central Television reported Sunday evening.

Earlier last week, Ye posed outside a primary school in Wanning, Hainan Province, with a sign saying "principal, call me if you want to get a hotel room, and leave the pupils alone." The principal of the primary school is charged with suspected child abuse, after staying in a hotel room with two primary school students. Ye's actions have led to many people posting copycat photos of themselves with similar signs online.
