Horticulture is not simply about being aesthetically pleasing- it also serves an important role in nature. Duo Tian, or raised fields with irrigation canals built through them, are a unique addition to China's countryside.
Recently, some of these fields in Xinghua, Jiangsu Province, were selected to officially become part of China's agricultural heritage. The different sized fields here not only enhance the rugged natural beauty of the region but also provide an invaluable resource for farmers, to ensure the land remains well irrigated.
In spring the fields become a sea of rapeseed flowers. Paddling in the canals while enjoying some of these beautiful countryside scenes can be quite an experience.
