Taiwan ultimatum to Philippines nears deadline

2013-05-14 13:44 CNTV     Web Editor: yaolan comment

Tuesday is the last day of the ultimatum given by Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou to the Philippines to respond to demands regarding the shooting death of a Taiwan's fisherman at sea.

Ma has demanded the Philippines to apologize, clarify the truth and punish the people held responsible. It's also been asked to offer compensation for the death and the damage to the fishing boat, and start negotiations with Taiwan on a fishery agreement as soon as possible.

If the Philippines does not make a positive response within 72 hours, Taiwan says it will retaliate. Taiwan will freeze all applications of Philippine laborers, recall its representative to the Philippines and ask the representative of the Philippines in Taipei to leave.

The shooting happened on Thursday morning, 164 nautical miles southeast of the southernmost tip of Taiwan. The victim was identified as Hung Shih-Cheng, 65 years old, one of four crew members of the Taiwan fishing vessel Guang Ta Hsin 28. Hung's body was taken back to Taiwan early Saturday morning.
