Rescue work continues since the 7.0-magnitude tremor hit southwest China's Sichuan province. Crews are trying to take advantage of the 10 last so-called "golden rescue hours", where survival rates are highest after an earthquake.
According to the Sichuan provincial government, as of 7 pm Beijing time, 192 people have died, and over 12,000 have been injured. Over 950 are in serious condition. 26 people are still missing. 22,000 people have been deployed in rescue efforts. Nearly 2 million people have been affected. By 2 pm Monday Beijing time, over 22,000 aftershocks have been recorded, with 4 aftershocks above magnitude-5.
The People's Liberation Army Air Force on Monday carried out its first airdrop operation to deliver food and water for survivors. Power has been restored in 336 villages, while sanitization and disease-prevention work has also started. Communication has been restored in 14 towns. Banks in the affected area are resuming business.
The national meteorological center says rain is expected in the quake-hit area Monday night, which will add to the difficulty of rescue work.
