Democratic League plays greater role in China

One of China's eight non-Communist parties, The China Democratic League, is playing an increasingly important role in the supervision of our democracy.

CCTV reporter Hou Na has talked with vice governor of Jiangsu Province,a well-off area in east China. He is a member of the Democratic League which gives him special duties under China's unique multi-party system.

As a member of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League, Cao Weixing's duty is to supervise democracy.

He's also the vice governor of Jiangsu Province, which means in a way, he's supervising himself.

Cao says he's been working for the Jiangsu CPPCC committee for years. The experience has brought him more confidence and experience when working in government.

He said, "Working in government is different from working in the Provincial CPPCC. I have to think of more practical solutions, and I will take political advisors' proposals more seriously, because I'm used to thinking from their perspective."

Cao's special role gives him special duties. He's brought his proposal to introduce fair and quality education to this year's two sessions.

During the past two years, the China Democratic League has submitted several reports to the CPC Central Committee and the State Council.

The areas the League has focused on are education, social welfare and income distribution.

The reports drew the attention of senior CPC leaders, and led to some problems being solved.

Like the Democratic League, there are altogether eight non-Communist parties in China. All of them have reshuffled their leaderships recently. With the eight parties supervising the democratic process practised by the CPC, the Communist Party's decision-making has been aided.

Political consultation is a major part of China's multiparty cooperation system.

The Communist Party of China consults with non-Communist parties or individuals on major state principles and key policies.

That consultation's a vital link in the scientific and democratic decision-making process and an important way for the CPC to enhance its governance capability.

The Democratic League has always attached great importance to education. I have a strong feeling that our suggestions and proposals are taken seriously by the central government. Most suggestions receive feedback very quickly.

China's eight non-Communist parties have over eight hundred thousand members. Around 32,000 of them work in government departments above county level.

More than 200 leading positions in provincial-level legislatures, governments and political advisory bodies are occupied by non-Communist party members. They are trusted with full power and authority in their work.
