Asia hoping for breakthrough after Oscars

Ang Lee's triumph begs the question - will his "wins" create more opportunities for underrepresented ethnic minorities in Hollywood films.

Ang Lee's Life of Pi went into Oscar night with 11 nominations - and in the end took home 4 statuettes - more hardware than any other film, including top honors for a director.

Life of Pi is the second Oscar win for Lee. Lee won Best Director for his film, Brokeback Mountain.

Though it's Ang Lee's second Oscar win, it's not every year we see an Asian face gracing the Oscar stage to receive an Academy award - the same is true for other actors of color. So why are ethnic minorities so under represented in Hollywood and how did ethnic minority actors fare in this year's awards

Denzel Washington received a best actor nomination for Flight .. 6-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis became the youngest best actress nominee ever for Beasts of the Southern Wild.

Scott Feinberg, columnist of the Hollywood reporter, said, "At least there is representation, in the best picture category, You've got Life of Pi, which is about an Indian guy made by an Asian filmmaker. You've got Django is unchained, which is controversial. You make a movie about slavery with Django Unchained and all of the people who get nominated are white!

But this Hollywood film expert addresses why he believes people of color continue to be underrepresented in Hollywood.

Feinberg said, "It's less about the Academy being biased against certain types of people, than it is about their just being limited opportunities within the industry. You can only do great work if you're given a chance to do great work 21:38 So the fact that we don't have very many Oscar nominees of color from year-to-year. It's that there just aren't many of them to pick from."

In fact, Feinberg says it's not just about depicting stories about people of color it's about writing scripts and casting roles regardless of race.

Feinberg said, "You want to see movies where race is not even remarked upon, that's gonna be interesting. And I think we're moving in that direction."

At least that's the hope.
