A primary school built using charity funds of 350,000 yuan ($56,070) from Hong Kong and funds from a local government became a trash recycling station soon after it was completed in 2008, according to the Beijing News.

The abandoned school, in Laoshan village, Kaili city, in Southwest China's Guizhou province, was built through Project Hope, a charity project under the China Youth Development Foundation that aims to enable poverty-stricken children to have better access to education.

The school received 200,000 yuan from the Lingchuan Charitable Foundation in Hong Kong and 150,000 yuan from the Kaili government.

The Beijing News reported that the school was closed soon after it opened in 2008. It was turned into a chicken farm for a short while and later became a trash recycling station.

The foundation's website says the charity organization donated to the building of two primary schools in Kaili in 2008. Volunteers from the foundation also sent new clothing to three schools in 2010, including the one that was abandoned.
