A young couple who were arrested on criminal charges by police in Guangdong Province for charging a small fee to help hundreds of migrant workers buy train tickets home for Spring Festival were released on Wednesday, said Li Xiujiao, a lawyer close to the case.
Li told the Global Times that the couple were released on bail and are awaiting trial.
The husband and wife, who claimed they only charged migrants 10 yuan ($1.6) to help them buy online tickets, were arrested on January 14, the Global Times reported earlier.
Police called it the year's largest scalping case in Guangdong and comes just days before the peak travel season.
Some experts say it is unfair to label them scalpers. "They acted as a purchasing agent, and criminal charge should not apply to them," Mao Lixin, a lawyer from the Beijing Shangquan Law Firm, told the Global Times earlier.
