Jilin province recently suffered the most intense cold snap since the coming of winter, with the lowest temperature reaching minus 30 degrees Celsius. The reporter interviewed some international students studying in universities in Changchun, the capital city of Jilin, to see how they were spending the bitter winter in China.

"Before coming to China, I do not know what is called "Qiuku" (a kind of long knitted underpants that can keep warm), and I haven't seen any heating before, not to mention the down jacket. I only see people wearing the down jacket on TV, because it is summer all the year round in my country," said Lit (nickname), an international student from the Democratic Republic of the Congo studying at Northeast Normal University. He said so while rubbing his own hands to make them warm. He came to Changchun in 2010, and it is obvious that he has not adapted to such a cold winter. He put his own photo that was taken in winter on the social networking site. In the photo, he is wearing thick clothes rolling in the snow. Below the photo, visitors left many comments.

Jenny (nickname) is from Bulgaria, and she is studying Chinese Language Education at Northeast Normal University. She came to China seven years ago. She said, "I am not afraid of the cold here, since I'm accustomed to it. When I was in Eastern Europe, I sometimes experienced such cold winter just as here in China," She added, "In Eastern Europe and Russia, some girls even wear short skirts with stockings at such low temperature!"

"I just came to Changchun this year and it is the first time I saw snow. Several companions and I had great fun the whole afternoon. We made snowmen and had snowball fights. We had so much fun in it!" Nguyen Nam, an international student from Vietnam described to the reporter with excitement.

Binet (nickname) from Nepal is Learning Department minister of International Students' Union at Norman Bethune College of Medicine Jilin University. He always wears two pairs of socks, two pairs of gloves, thermal underwear and thick cotton-padded clothes when he goes out these days in such a cold weather. Before he came to Changchun, he studied language for one year in Tianjin, a city in the northern part of China where winter is not very cold.

He added, "Winter in Tianjin is not as cold as here! Whenever in such a cold weather, I will remind those international students who just came to the Changchun to wear more warm clothing and be careful when going outside. The ice on the sidewalk is not melted throughout the winter, so you must be careful while walking on it."
