Authorities in Huangnan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, have cracked five self-immolation cases and detained major suspects, official media said.
According to qhnews.com, the official news outlet of the province, the suspects were arrested in recent joint operations between the local prefecture authorities and the provincial public security bureau. More details of the cases have yet to be revealed.
Authorities also launched a campaign to confiscate illegal satellite TV antennas, as it says local herdsmen have been watching foreign "anti-China" programs by using those antennas. Meanwhile, local authorities have accelerated the installation of its own TV and radio signal towers. TV and radio coverage in the prefecture will reach 70 percent in the future, qhnews.com reported.
The prefecture also organized local party cadres and prestigious monks and religious personages to promote the teaching of Buddhism, exposing the anti-social, anti-humane and anti-religious nature of the self-immolation.
On December 9, local police in Aba county, Sichuan Province, said that they have detained a monk and his nephew for their roles in inciting a series of self-immolations. The suspects acted on the instructions of the Dalai Lama and his followers, according to their confessions and police investigations.
According to police, when someone agreed to commit suicide by burning himself or herself, the two suspects would record his or her personal and family information, take pictures and promise to "pass the information on to India."
