Man sentenced to 5 years for killing wife

A man was sentenced to five years in prison for killing his paralyzed wife in Gansu province, Lanzhou Morning Post reported on Wednesday.

Jia Zhengwu, a resident of Jingning county, pushed his wife surnamed Zhang and her wheelchair off a five-meter embankment by the Yellow River on April 21, 2011. 

Lanzhou Intermediate People's Court made the ruling on Tuesday, giving Jia a lighter punishment considering the fact that he had tried every means to treat his ill wife in the years before, the report said.

Zhang had been paralyzed from waist since 2003. The court said she had suffered so much that she once thought of committing suicide. The husband had sought treatment for his wife for eight years before his crime. The court took those circumstances into account when making the decision.
