    The Nutcracker

    The Nutcracker is a ballet that was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The libretto is adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann's story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Tchaikovsky's score has become one of his most famous compositions. The show is considered one of the classical performances for the Christmas season every year. This performance is produced by Shanghai Grand Theatre, and features the English-born Derek Deane who is the choreographer, director and costume designer of the show.

    The Broken Bridge

    The original musical piece is co-produced by the Hangzhou Hongyi Movie and Television Culture Company and Hangzhou Theatre, and the location of the story is based upon the well-known scenic spot in Hangzhou, Duan Qiao, which is also known as the "broken bridge." The story is divided into four parts, telling a century-long love story.

    Yundi Li Piano Recital

    Yundi Li rose to fame with victory at the International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition in 2000. At the age of 18, he was the youngest ever and first Chinese pianist ever to win the first prize. Li was initially associated with the works of Chopin and Liszt, the two composers who dominated his first recordings for Deutsche Grammophon and who he often performed in his concert programs. His second recording of Liszt released in August 2003 was named Best Classical CD of the Year by the New York Times. Today Li's repertory has expanded to include the works of Domenico Scarlatti, Mozart, Schumann, Prokofiev, and Ravel among others.

    Liang Weizhou Solo Exhibition

    Artist Liang Weizhou's latest photographs and works on paper are presented in this exhibition entitled Post-Jiang'nan (Jiang'nan means the area to the south of Yangtze River). Born in 1962, the Shanghainese painter has become known over the past fifteen years for his expressionist paintings, and he has also gained critical acclaim and exposure for his series of photography-based works. This will be the artist's third solo exhibition at the gallery, and his works have been shown in Germany, Denmark, Japan, Russia and Sweden.

    Perspectives

    This group exhibition features works from artists including Hung Liu, Li Lei, Leng Hong and Shan Sa. These artists convey their unique perspectives via historical social commentary, abstract expressionism and ancient allegories. In conjunction, works by Xiong Qin and Wang Xiaoben illustrate new artistic dialogues in shadow, light and line. All artists draw their inspiration from both East and West, creating visual narrations of contemporary realities.

    Fred Eerdekens Solo Exhibition

    Belgian artist Fred Eerdekens is internationally renowned for his sculptures and installations in which he combines language and sculpture into one piece of work. The artist combines the ingenuity and creativity of light with his materials. The common themes throughout each installation are light, shadow, language and spatial concepts.

    Women in China

    Singaporean artist Dayang van Wezel's works use mixed mediums to celebrate women's perspectives as powerful people throughout the history in China. Portuguese artist Mafi Santo's oil paintings are inspired by ordinary women's daily lives in Shanghai today. This exhibition reveals an understanding of Chinese people's day-to-day life and of Chinese culture as a whole.

    World in Mirror

    History can also be found and reflected in beautiful forms such as these: exquisitely crafted mirrors made of bronze. Cotsen, a Los Angeles businessman, philanthropist and art collector purchased his first Chinese bronze mirrors in Hong Kong in the early 1950s. Today his collection contains thousands of pieces, including substantial assemblages of textiles, basketry and folk art. His collection now makes its public debut at the Shanghai Museum.

    Guitar Concert

    Luke Trimble is an award-winning American classical guitarist. Under the direction of renowned composer and guitarist Bryan Johanson, Luke graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from Portland State University. He has performed in master classes with many of the world's finest guitarists. He was awarded first prize, alongside fellow guitarists Mario Diaz and Jesse McCann, for the trio's performance at the 2007 University of Texas Brownsville Ensemble Guitar Competition. During James Cohan Gallery's current exhibition Ingrid Calame Drawings & Mark Strand Collages, Trimble will play a holiday concert for music lovers. To reserve a seat, which is advisable, please contact the gallery. Light refreshments will be served.
