The Chinese government plans to improve social services for retired military officers, especially senior officers and those who are disabled, the Beijing News reported Sunday.

The newspaper quoted the Ministry of Civil Affairs as saying that the ministry planned to introduce private nursing and day-care services for retired military officers in order to improve efficiency.

Elderly officers, who used to be cared for by the armed forces, have been gradually handed over to the civilian health sector.

According to the ministry, more than 240,000 retired officers have been put under civilian care.

The government will also provide housing and nursing services for them.

Efforts will be made to ensure the quality of life of these elderly officers, especially those who are childless, are very old or in poor health, the ministry said.

Local governments are urged to allocate proper fundings and resources for them, the statement added.
