China concerned about Palestinian-Israeli peace talks

2012-09-28 15:37 Xinhua     Web Editor: Gu Liping comment

China has deep concerns over the stalemate in the Palestinian-Israeli peace negotiations and hopes that the talks can be resumed soon, says Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.

Yang made the remarks Thursday at the General Debate of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.

"China is deeply concerned about the stalled Palestinian-Israeli peace talks and the economic and humanitarian difficulties facing the Palestinian people," Yang said.

Direct talks between the Palestinians and Israel came to a standstill in September 2010 due to Israeli settlement activities in the occupied territory.

"Turbulence in the region should not divert international attention from the Palestinian issue," Yang said. "China supports the Palestinian people in establishing, on the basis of the 1967 borders, an independent Palestinian state that enjoys full sovereignty with East Jerusalem as its capital."

"China supports Palestine's membership in the United Nations and other international organizations," he said. "China urges both Palestine and Israel to take concrete measures to remove obstacles and work for an early resumption and substantive progress of the peace talks."
