One dead in river crash

One person died after driving into a river in Putuo district Monday morning, Shanghai Television Station reported.

According to witnesses, a red Volkswagen Santana crashed through the guardrails along the river and drove into the river. The sound of the crash alerted nearby residents who came to assist with a rescue.

Firefighters and emergency rescue personnel arrived shortly thereafter. The 50-something driver was found dead when the car was pulled out of the river.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
