Leading Japanese retailer Ito Yokado, part of Seven & I Holdings Co Ltd, is still considering if it will close its operations in Beijing on Tuesday, a day when China remembers Japan's wartime occupation of parts of the country.

Cheng Ning, director of public affairs at Beijing Huatang Ito Yokado Ltd, said they have received orders from headquarters in Japan to ensure the safety of customers, employees, and property in China.

The local government in Beijing also advised them to enhance security, food safety and the safe operation of the supply chain.

Cheng said they are still waiting on orders from management on whether to continue operations on such a sensitive date.

In recent days, some Ito Yokado stores in Beijing have closed two hours earlier than usual to alleviate the impact of the ongoing activities targeting Japanese businesses that have erupted in many cities in China.

As a result, the businesses have been affected by shortened operational hours.

There are eight Ito Yokada stores in Beijing. Last year, the eight outlets had revenues of 2.7 billion yuan ($425 million).
