People who have done good deeds in South China's Guangdong Province will be entitled to enjoy a range of preferential policies including special consideration for their child's education and application for affordable housing, according to a proposal aimed at encouraging a more charitable ethos among residents.

The draft, now seeking public opinion, applies to both local and nonlocal people in the province.

According to the draft, the children of those who are injured or killed while helping others will get first consideration when entering a public school. Offspring who are junior or senior high school students will get bonus marks during high school and the national college entrance exam.

The province will also give priority to those who have done heroic deeds when taking applications for public housing.

Meanwhile, the hukou, or household registration permit, of the spouse and children of heroes may also be switched to Guangdong, with city officials being asked to give them priority.

Families of those who risked and lost their lives will receive at least 450,000 yuan ($70,947), of which two thirds will be from the provincial government and the remainder from the city.
