The Sino-Singapore Eco-city in north China's Tianjin could be replicable and scalable to other cities in China, said Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Tuesday afternoon during a two-day visit to the site.
In his second visit to the area in seven years, Lee said in a meeting with Zhang Gaoli, secretary of the Communist Party of China Tianjin Municipal Committee, that Tianjin and its New Binhai Area, where the Eco-city is located, have changed dramatically.
In 2007, Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and Lee Hsien Loong signed the Framework Agreement on the Development of an Eco-city in Tianjin, aiming to tackle global climate change, strengthen environmental protection, conserve resources and energy and build a harmonious society.
Although the construction of the city is still at a preliminary stage, Lee said he believes the Singapore side will give it full support.
During his stay, Lee inspected the eco-city's service center and a national animation industry park, where he watched a short 3D documentary. He then visited a Singaporean company and a resident family. Lee said all of this left him with deep impression.
The prime minister planted a spruce with local officials before he finished the visit, saying, "Don't forget to water it" in Chinese.
He also paid a visit to Tianjin urban planning exhibition center and cultural center on Wednesday.
