The People's Bank of China (PBOC), the country's central bank, on Friday issued a set of gold and silver commemorative coins featuring traditional Peking Opera face makeup.

The set, consisting of two gold and three silver coins, are legal tender in China, said a statement on the PBOC's website.

The five-ounce gold coin features the Peking Opera mask of red-faced Guan Yu, a righteous warrior during the late Eastern Han Dynasty of China. It has a maximum circulation of 2,000.

The 0.25-ounce gold coin features Sun Wukong, the Monkey King in the classic novel Journey to the West, with a maximum circulation of 30,000.

The five-ounce silver coin features the mask of Zhong Kui, a vanquisher of ghosts and evils in Chinese mythology, with a maximum circulation of 10,000.

The other two silver coins, which weigh one ounce each, feature Zhang Fei and Tao Hong, two figures in popular Chinese tales. The maximum circulation is 50,000 each.

The latest issuance was the last set in the three-set series of Beijing Opera mask-themed commemorative coins.
