    Rainstorms affect 378,600 in central China

    Torrential rain that has swept central China's Hubei province since Monday has affected 378,600 people, local authorities said on Wednesday.

    The storm, with precipitation up to the 317 mm recorded in Yidu city, forced the area to be evacuated of 1,130 people, according to the provincial flood control and drought relief headquarters.

    A total of 152 houses collapsed and 49,733 hectares of farmland were affected in 13 cities and counties, it added.

    More than 30 roads have been blocked and 38 river banks damaged. The water level of more than 50 lakes and reservoirs surpassed the warning level, it said.

    Economic losses to the extreme weather are estimated to be over 100 million yuan (15.8 million U.S. dollars).
