The death toll from torrential rains in southwest China's Guizhou Province has risen to five, after a rain-triggered mudslide killed two people Monday morning.

The landslide destroyed a house in Rongqing Village, Ceheng County, at around 8 p.m. Sunday, burying three villagers in the house, rescuers said.

One person in the house was rescued at around 2 a.m. Monday, while the other two, who were found around 3:50 a.m., later died in hospital.

Torrential rains swept across the province over the past several days.

Floods and mudslides caused by the downpours had left three people dead and affected 226,000 people in Kaili City as well as Tianzhu and Majiang counties by Sunday.

More than 2,200 people were evacuated and nearly 900 houses collapsed in those areas. A total of 7,400 hectares of farmland had also been affected.

The provincial meteorological center said the weather would be better on Monday, as rains in most of the areas were expected to cease.
